Kelly Park Compton Crips (E/S KPCC)

The Eastside Kelly Park Compton Crips (ES KPCC), also known as KPCC or K Gang, are a longstanding African-American street gang based in the city of Compton, California. Once known as the Kelly Park Hustlers during the 1980s, this East Compton set established itself as one of the most recognized Crip sets in the region. Their territory spans from Muriel Avenue in the west to Stoneacre Avenue in the east, and from Alondra Boulevard in the north to Greenleaf Boulevard in the south.

Members of KPCC traditionally rep blue, but they also adopt green and blue sports caps, most notably Kentucky Wildcats, Kansas Jayhawks, or Kansas City Royals hats, as identifiers of their affiliation.

Origins and Neighborhood History

Compton was once a predominantly white suburb during the 1950s, but the westside began to see an influx of middle-class Black families moving in, many of whom were relocating from Watts. By the 1970s, the city’s racial makeup shifted, and Black youth across Compton began creating their own neighborhood identities, often centered around parks and schools.

During the 1960s and early 1970s, local teens formed informal cliques like the Kelly Park Boys, who were known for playing sports and hosting house parties. They competed against other park-based cliques like South Park, Leuders Park, Wilson Park, and Gonzales Park, many of them attending Dominguez High School.

By the early 1980s, a new generation of youth revived the identity of the neighborhood, this time calling themselves the Kelly Park Hustlers. Whether they were former Pirus who dropped the red flag or a separate group entirely remains uncertain. However, their focus was on hustling and stacking money, distancing themselves from traditional Blood and Crip politics—at least for a while.

Eventually, by 1985, the Hustler identity was phased out, and the gang became known as the Kelly Park Compton Crips.

Conflict and Retaliation: War with Lueders Park Piru

Tensions in Compton escalated in December 1985, when Charles “Beeb” Stevens, a 15-year-old KPCC member, was shot and killed in a drive-by while standing in Kelly Park. KPCC members blamed Leuders Park Piru and quickly retaliated. Two days later, Don Turner, a 30-year-old former Lueders Park Piru, was killed in an apparent revenge shooting.

This sparked a police crackdown. A task force of 43 officers launched a major sweep of the area, arresting several suspects including Eric Darnell Garrett and Dennis Earl Reed, as well as multiple juveniles. Charges were eventually dropped against Reed, while Kenneth Brown, age 21, turned himself in and was charged in connection with the homicide.

Law Enforcement Crackdown

By July 1986, the Compton Police Department established a substation in Kelly Park due to rising violence. Authorities banned the wearing of gang colors in the park—blue for Crips, red for Bloods, and green for Lime Hood Piru. The crackdown initially led to a noticeable decrease in violence, but tensions continued to simmer beneath the surface.

Internal Gang Conflicts and Shifting Alliances

In the 1980s, KPCC maintained close ties with fellow Crip sets like the Neighborhood Compton Crips and Atlantic Drive Compton Crips, often gathering on Caldwell Street between Harris Ave and Castlegate Ave. This informal alliance was referred to as the Kelly Park Neighborhood.

However, when crack cocaine flooded the streets in the mid-to-late 1980s, old alliances began to fracture. The same hustle that brought wealth also bred paranoia and power struggles. By the mid-1990s, KPCC found itself at war with its former allies, including the Neighborhood Compton Crips and Atlantic Drive Crips.

Cultural Impact and Notable Affiliates

Few gangs in Compton history carry the same cultural weight as KPCC, in large part due to their most famous member: Eric “Eazy-E” Wright. As a teen and young adult, Eazy-E gained notoriety as a neighborhood hustler before founding Ruthless Records and forming N.W.A. with Dr. Dre (Andre Young), who also lived nearby on Harris Avenue.

Other notable KPCC affiliates include:

Tweedy Bird Loc: A gang member turned rapper who came up during the 1990s.

AWOL: Member of Nationwide Rip Ridaz, a Crip-affiliated rap group.

MC Ren: Though not confirmed as a KPCC member, was closely affiliated with N.W.A. and Compton's Crip scene.

Hood Activities

Like most street gangs, KPCC’s operations are fueled by a mix of illegal enterprises. These include:

Drug trafficking, primarily crack cocaine and other narcotics.
Firearms sales, with many members profiting from the illegal arms trade.
Extortion of local dealers not affiliated with the gang.
Pimping, robbery, and auto theft.
Vandalism and tagging, often used to mark territory or send messages to rivals.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, KPCC saw a surge in power and membership thanks to the crack epidemic. Their reputation was built on both brutality and street business acumen, solidifying their place in Compton’s gangland history.
